Tragedy on Trace
Cyclist Killed While Biking on Trace

Last week we experienced a tragedy on the Natchez Trace Parkway. Esther Hagemen, 51 of the Netherlands, was biking south on the parkway near milepost 231 on the afternoon of April 22nd when she was hit from behind by a southbound 2009 GMC Suburban. Rangers, Chickasaw County deputies and Van Vleet VFD personnel all responded. Hagemen died at the scene. The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation, per Chief Ranger, Allen Etheridge. We have contacted Chief Etheridge's office and the US Attorneys office for updates. We are extremely saddened to lose another life on the road and hope we are able to see closure for the Hagemen family. We will keep our site updated as the updates come. Please remember Esther and be safe.

Bike Valet

We'll park your bike! This past weekend, BWM, LOU Pathways Commission and the Oxford Boy Scouts came together to offer FREE Bike Valet for everyone riding their bike to the Ole Miss vs Georgia baseballBike Valet game. Those participating in Bike Valet not only received secured parking by the Boy Scouts, they were also given reduced entry to the game ($2.00) and were entered in a drawing to win 1 of 2 bikes donated by Regions Bank and Active Oxford! There were over 40 participants and 2 separate groups arrived on tandems! To view more photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/bikewalkmississippi/BikeValet?feat=directlink

Dan Mossing, Oxford Boy Scouts, created bamboo bike racks for the event which held up nicely and are eco-friendly!

MDOT Bicycle Safety Classes
Mississippi Department of Transportation along with BWM will be bringing the League of American Bicyclists to our state to train 51 residents on Bicycle Safety and hopefully we'll have just that many League Certified Instructors at the end of this summer. A big thank you to MDOT for funding the training and seeing the need for education throughout our state. Each person trained is required to teach 5 classes within their community.
Double Decker Report

Representative Warner McBride kicked off the Double Decker Spring Ride this past weekend, April 25. Rep. McBride addressed the cyclists before they departed letting them know that he and others intend to keep working to make Mississippi a safe place for cyclists and pedestrians. Rep. Mcbride and his wife then rode in one of the routes with their bikes. There was an incredible turnout with 233 cyclists safely making their way through Lafayette County. We are very thankful for Rep. McBride and his wife Phyllis for spending their afternoon with us. We also want to thank Oxford Cycling for making BWM the charity of their ride.
