The Bicycle Friendly America℠ program is a designation awarded from the League of American Bicyclists and is divided into award categories including:  Bicycle Friendly State, Bicycle Friendly Community, Bicycle Friendly Business and Bicycle Friendly University.

In 2012, Bike Walk Mississippi was awarded a grant from Advocacy Advance, (a partnership between the League of American Bicyclists and the Alliance for Biking and Walking) - this award supported the creation of a Statewide program now known as Bicycle Friendly Mississippi.

How does Bicycle Friendly Mississippi work?

Bike Walk Mississippi provides local workshops, trainings and consulting services to communities across Mississippi who want to increase their bicycle friendliness and who desire assistance in applying for the League's Bicycle Friendly awards. We work with communities and groups across the state to create local community action plans that identify both low-hanging fruit and long term solutions to increasing Bicycle Friendliness.

Sign up for a Bicycle Friendly Mississippi workshop today!

During a typical Bicycle Friendly Community workshop, officials from Bike Walk Mississippi will help you gather together local officials, city staff, local government representatives, members of law enforcement, parents, representatives from parks and recreation, planners, engineers and local advocates together for interactive education workshop on becoming more Bicycle Friendly.

At the workshop, we will review the application and identify top priorities that are important to your community; we will then begin to identify “low-hanging fruit” to make immediate changes and will identify long term changes to begin working toward within the year. We will give an overview regarding the key aspects of bicycle friendly programs, policies and infrastructure, often referred to as the “5 E’s”  Engineering, Encouragement, Education, Enforcement, and Evaluation/Planning.  We will facilitate an interactive discussion that will identify your community’s key objectives and we will work with you during the workshop to create a tangible action plan for increasing your bicycle friendliness!  You will leave the workshop knowing what steps you need to take to make your community more bicycle friendly and will leave encouraged to know that YOU can do it!

We currently have open spots available for Mississippi communities, clubs or other organizations who want to start the process toward becoming more Bicycle Friendly.  Contact us to schedule a workshop or consultation today!  Sign up today!

As part of this campaign, the state of Mississippi has increased 15 spots from #47 to #32 as a Nationally ranked Bicycle Friendly State!
